Invader and Field Pass battled all the way to the wire in Saturday’s $250,000 Jeff Ruby S. (G3), with Grandview Equine, Cheyenne Stables LLC, and LNJ Foxwoods’ Invader getting edged by just a neck in Turfway Park’s prep for the Kentucky Derby (G1).
Invader had won two races in a row over the Turfway surface, including the John Battaglia Memorial, and was just a few strides away from making it three in a row. After tracking Fancy Liquor for the first seven furlongs, Invader moved alongside the pacesetter and wore him down, only to have Field Pass’ late move stop Invader from claiming victory.
Invader’s runner-up finished upped his earnings to $153,200, with a record of 2-1-1 from seven starts.
Trained by Wesley Ward, Invader’s next start is yet to be determined. Ward normally races at Keeneland, but that track has canceled its spring meet due to the Corona virus.
