Candy Meadows’ bred Hoosier Philly will make her second start of 2023 in Saturday’s $400,000 Fair Grounds Oaks (G2) as she takes her next step on the road to the May 5 Kentucky Oaks (G1) at Churchill Downs.

The 3-year-old gray/roan filly is looking to rebound after suffering her first loss in last month’s Rachel Alexandra S. (G2). Despite the loss, trainer Tom Amoss remains very confident in his stable star.

“Zero,” Amoss replied when recently asked if he’s lost confidence in the daughter of Into Mischief. “I still think she’s the best horse I have ever had in my barn.”

Hoosier Philly has worked three times since the Rachel Alexandra, including a bullet five furlongs in one minute flat on March 16.

Hoosier Philly drew the outside post in the field of five that will go 1 1/16-miles. The Rachel Alexandra is race 11 and will go postward at 6:08 pm ET.

“I’ll be nervous when she goes to the gate,” Amoss said. “Leading into the race I’m just trying to concentrate on the things I can control and I think we’ve done a good job taking care of those things. I would love to think that last race was a one off. There is enough evidence to suggest it will be. This race coming up will determine whether that’s true or not. I know that.”

Hoosier Philly is owned by Gold Standard Racing Stable LLC. She has three wins in four starts, including blowout victories in the Rags to Riches S. and Golden Rod S. (G2), both at Churchill Downs. She has earned $462,610.

Candy Meadows consigned and sold Hoosier Philly for $510,000 at the 2021 Keeneland September Yearling sale.
