Cheyenne Stable LLC’s homebred colt Apollo Ten secured his first stakes win on July 14 at Monmouth Park with a front-running tally in the $100,000 My Frenchman S.
The 3-year-old colt, trained by Christophe Clement, switched back to the turf for the 5 ½-furlong My Frenchman following a gallant second-place effort in last month’s Tom Ridge S. over the synthetic surface at Presque Isle Downs. Hustled out of the gate on Sunday, Apollo Ten tussled with Mattingly for the first three furlongs before pulling away turning for home. The dark bay colt opened up a two-length lead in midstretch, then held off the late charge of Roi Soleil to win by three-quarters of a length in 1:02.53 on the firm turf.
“I knew Mattingly was the horse to beat to the front,” said winning jockey Jairo Rendon. “My horse just put himself there and he was pretty comfortable so I just went with it. The plan was to sit second behind Mattingly but this horse didn’t want any part of that.”
Apollo Ten has now won three of six starts and earned $160,150. A son of Violence, he is the fourth colt to race out of two-time stakes winner Stormy Regatta, who also is the dam of millionaire and Grade 2 winner Bay Storm.
Stormy Regatta has unraced 2-year-old filly by American Pharoah, a yearling colt by Essential Quality and a 2024 filly by Justify.
