Cheyenne Stable LLC’s Mondego (GB) will make his final start of the year on Dec. 28 at Santa Anita Park in the Sand Gabriel S. (G3).
This will be the 5-year-old’s first outing at 1 1/8-miles since June, and just his second at the distance in over two years, after competing in turf marathons the majority of the time over that span.
Grade 1 placed as a 3-year-old, Mondego is seeking his first stakes win in Sunday’s race. After drawing post 2 for trainer Mike McCarthy, Mondego will be ridden by Flavien Prat for the first time. Prat is a contender for the jockey Eclipse Award for this year.
Mondego has had success at the nine-furlong distance, winning twice and finishing second once in seven outings. His lifetime earnings stand at $335,047.
Mondego drew post 2 in the 10-horse field. The San Gabriel is race 9 at 6:16 pm ET.
