American Promise draws rail for $500,000 Risen Star S. (G2)

American Promise, who was bred and sold by Candy Meadows LLC, is part of a 13-horse field in Saturday’s $500,000 Risen Star S. (G2) at Fair Grounds.

The 1 1/8-mile contest is a key race on the Triple Crown Trail and is the first part of the “Championship Series” on the Road to the Kentucky Derby (G1). It offers 50-25-15-10-5 Derby qualifying points to the top five finishers.

American Promise is coming out a roughly-run Southwest S. (G3) Jan. 25 at Oaklawn Park as he seeks his first stakes win. The bay son of Justify drew the inside post for trainer D. Wayne Lukas, and will be ridden by apprentice champion rider of 2024 Keith Asmussen.

American Promise is owned by BC Stables, LLC, who purchased the colt for $750,000 from the Candy Meadows consignment at the 2023 Keeneland September Yearling sale.

American Promise is out of Tapella, making him a half-brother to the graded stakes winner Hoosier Philly.

The Risen Star is the last of 14 races on a stakes-filled Saturday card, with a post time of 7:30 pm ET.
