Bubbles on Ice won a hard-fought head victory in Sunday’s $100,000 Memories of Silver S. on the Aqueduct turf course, her first start in seven months as well as her debut for owners Glen Hill Farm, Madaket Stables LLC and Cheyenne Stables LLC.
Bubbles on Ice was purchased privately by her owners after running in the the Moyglare Stud S. (G1) in Ireland last September and transferred to the Christophe Clement barn.
Breaking from the outside post in the field of seven, Bubbles On Ice was quickly guided to the fence by Javier Castellano and allowed to settle at the back of the pack. The 3-year-old remained at the back just behind Fluffy Socks as the field went through a half-mile in a slow :51.09. Despite the tepid pace, Bubbles On Ice began to make up ground and was full of run as she came four-wide into the stretch. She powered past the entire field with Fluffy Socks giving chase all the way to the wire. The final time for the 1 1/16-miles on the firm turf was 1:45.14.
“(This was) the first time out (for us), I thought it was better that she was covered up,” said Clement of the chestnut’s trip. “She got a great ride and saved ground. She had a great-turn-of-foot. There was a small question mark on the distance, but she showed her form this afternoon.”
Bubbles On Ice, who had four starts in Ireland last summer, has won two of five overall and earned $89,620.
