Candy Meadows-bred Hoosier Philly will make her first start since the Breeders’ Cup in Saturday’s $250,000 Matron S. at Oaklawn Park for owner Bill Stone and trainer Tom Amoss.
Now four years old, Hoosier Philly is seeking her first victory since winning the Monomoy Girl S. in dominating fashion has June at Ellis Park. Though she has raced at seven tracks in her 10 lifetime starts, she has never raced at Oaklawn. Amoss, who is based at Fair Grounds over the winter, has put a solid series of works into the gray filly in preparation for her return.
With a bankroll of $728,410, Hoosier Philly has far out-earned all of her competition in the 10-horse field. The Matron, at six furlongs, will be the shortest race of her career since she was victorious in her 5 ½-furlong debut in September of 2022.
Hoosier Philly will be ridden Saturday by Edgar Morales, who has been aboard her for all but two of her races. The Matron is race 10 as part of the Arkansas Derby (G1) card, with a post time of 6:12 pm ET.
