Hoosier Philly heads west for Grade 1 Beholder Mile

In what will be her first start on the west coast since late 2023, Candy Meadows LLC-bred Hoosier Philly is slated to make her next start in Saturday’s $300,000 Beholder Mile S. (G1) at Santa Anita Park.

Owner Gold Standard Racing Stable LLC and trainer Tom Amoss decided to ship the 5-year-old mare to California after a very encouraging performance in the Jan. 25 Houston Ladies Classic (G3), where she was beaten less than a length after a prolonged speed duel.

With $956,465 in earnings and five career stakes wins, Hoosier Philly would surpass the $1 million mark with a first or second-place finish in Saturday’s two-turn event.

The Beholder drew a solid field, including the undefeated Cavalieri, who is making her first Grade 1 start, Chilean-bred Richi, who won several graded races in her home country, and Tarifa, winner of last year’s Mother Goose S. (G2).

Hoosier Philly drew post two and will be ridden for the first time by Santa Anita-based Umberto Rispoli. Post time for Saturday’s eighth race is 6:30 pm ET.
