Cheyenne Stables and Mac Nichol’s Madefromlucky collared Turco Bravo inside the final furlong to capture the 1 5/8-miles Temperence Hill Inv. Sunday at Belmont Park, the second straight stakes win and fourth overall the 5-year-old’s career.
As is the case in many marathon events, the early pace was slow, with the first six furlongs going in 1:14.88. Madefromlucky was about three lengths from the front when he began his drive outside the half-mile pole. When he didn’t make up any ground along the inside, Javier Castellano moved his mount to the far outside at the top of the stretch. Madefromlucky responded, ultimately running down Turco Bravo to finish the test in 2:44.88.
“I was a little concerned he wasn’t really dragging Javier anywhere along the way like he did last time at Parx, but he was kind of in between horses,” trainer Todd Pletcher said. “When Javier finally had the opportunity to get out and around he re-engaged himself and came with a good run down the lane to get there. We were kind of looking to see what his specialty might be and it kind of looks like these distances suit him. We only tried it one time before previously in the Belmont so it took a while to get back to it, but he seems to enjoy it.”
Madefromlucky won the 1 1/2-mile Greenwood Cup (G3) easily last time out, and is now 6-5-5 in 24 starts and has earned $1,351,500.
