After making a trip last month to Colonial Downs for the Virginia Derby (G3), Cheyenne Stable LLC’s Mondego (GB) has come back to New York for the $500,000 Jockey Club Derby Inv. (G3) on Oct. 7 at Aqueduct.
Though he has raced at both Saratoga and Belmont Park, Saturday’s race will be the 3-year-old’s first start at Aqueduct, where NYRA is currently holding the Belmont fall meet while that track undergoes renovations.
The 1 3/8-mile Jockey Club drew a very solid field of nine, led by the European shipper Measured Time (GB) from the always-tough Charles Appleby barn. Mondego, who will be ridden for the first time by Dylan Davis, drew the outside post.
Mondego’s two prior wins both came at 1 1/8-miles, and he was beaten just a length going 10 furlongs in the Belmont Derby (G1) in July. Overall, the Christophe Clement trainee has earned $244,807 in seven starts.
Saturday’s Jockey Club is race nine on the card, with a post time of 4:22 pm ET.
