After being away from stakes company since late 2023, Cheyenne Stable LLC’s Mondego (GB) will make his next start on Aug. 30 in the $300,000 Del Mar H. (G2).
The 1 3/8-mile turf marathon drew a field of 11 older horses.
Mondego burst upon the scene with two straight wins to start his career in 2023, then was beaten just a length while finishing third in the Belmont Derby (G1). Under the tutelage of Christophe Clement on the east coast at the time, he was transferred to trainer Mike McCarthy earlier this year.
Under McCarthy, the 5-year-old son of Lope de Vega (IRE) has made two starts, most recently winning an optional allowance race on Aug. 2 over the same course and distance of Saturday’s race.
On Saturday Mondego will be ridden by Kazushi Kimura, who was aboard for the allowance win. The duo will break from post 6 in Saturday’s 11th race on a stakes-filled card, with a post time of 6:43 pm ET.
