Native Land back to dirt for $275,000 Ellis Park Derby

After trying Woodbine’s synthetic surface in late June, Cheyenne Stables LLC’s Native Land returns to the main track for the $275,000 Ellis Park Derby on Aug. 11.

The 3-year-old colt drew post six in the field of seven that will go one mile out of Ellis’ uniquely-configured 1 ½-turn course.

All six of Native Land’s starts to date have come at one mile or more. He broke his maiden very impressively by 6 ½-lengths on March 9 at Oaklawn Park and came back to be a game allowance winner a month later at Keeneland. Since then, he faced graded company in the Peter Pan S. (G3) and the Marine (G3), the latter at Woodbine.

Sunday’s race drew a strong field, with the likes of multiple stakes winner Who Dey, the undefeated Most Wanted, graded stakes placed Stretch Ride and Florida Derby (G1) runner-up Catalytic.

Native Land is trained by Riley Mott, son of hall of famer Bill. The bay colt is by Mastery, a three-time graded stakes winner who was undefeated in four starts for Cheyenne before retiring to stud at Claiborne Farm in 2017. Mastery recently relocated to Lex Stud in Japan.

The Ellis Park Derby is race 6 on Sunday, with a post time of 3:26 pm ET.
