John O’ Meara and Cheyenne Stable LLC’s Roses for Debra won for the seven time in nine lifetime starts with a commanding score in the $150,000 Smart N Fancy S. Aug. 25 at Saratoga.
The 4-year-old filly, who won the $100,000 Malvern Rose S. in 2022 and the July 22 Caress S. (G3) at Saratoga, now sports a record of 7-1-0 in nine starts and has earned $406,430. The gray/roan is a perfect 4-for-4 in 2023.
Facing just three foes after four others scratched because of the soft turf course, Roses for Debra was ridden patiently in third for three furlongs before jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. called on her for run. She quickly inhaled the leaders and cruised through the lane to win by 3 ¼-lengths in 1:01.82. The final time was good for a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 101.
“She’s brilliant,” said Miguel Clement, son and assistant to trainer Christophe Clement. “She’s shown that she can win from on the lead nearly, from way off the pace, on very firm and as soft as it was today. Doesn’t matter, she has a devastating turn of foot on any going and it’s exciting.”
With the extended winning streak, Roses for Debra has her connections looking at bigger targets for the fall races.
“I think we are probably going to go to Presque Isle for a Grade 2 (the Presque Isle Masters on Sept. 18),” said O’Meara. “From there, either to Keeneland or the Breeders’ Cup.”
