Cheyenne Stables’ Ulele made her stakes debut in Friday’s $250,000 Black Eyed Susan S. (G2) at Pimlico and came up just a half-length short of victory in the 1 1/8-mile contest for 3-year-old fillies.
After a good break, Joel Rosario tucked Ulele along the rail just behind the leaders in third. Content to hold his sport, Rosario was just a length from the lead after six furlongs in 1:10.81. Coming into the stretch, Ulele found and opening along the rail and locked in battle with Point of Honor the rest of the way. The duo was about three lengths clear of the field at the wire.
“Joel gave her a perfect trip and she ran a great race,” said trainer Brad Cox. “It was a tremendous race from her and she’s a tough filly.”
Ulele picked up $50,000 for the effort and is now 2-2-1 in six starts with earnings of $174,200.
